Last week I went to see Shrinebuilder at the Casbah. I was struck by the relationship each musician had with his instrument. Scott Kelly dominates his guitar pushing it forward then pulling it back like a wild animal that must be tamed, forcing it to do as he commanded. Dale Grover pounds away, never letting up, focused and serious. Al Cisneros takes his bass on a hypnotic journey swaying back and forth, back and forth in a musical trance. And Wino’s guitar was like an extra appendage on his body, comfortably, naturally hanging and responding to his every move.
